These four starting characters fit a game set in (or near) the New Empire of Japan, a nation that's rejected technology in favor of simple living. The four became traveling companions and then friends, sharing their secrets. They are currently volunteering at a Shinto shrine in the countryside.
Atago Akito
Complexity ★★★★☆. A Tengu empty-hand "monk" (Martial Hero) with a wide range of both enlightened and magic powers. Kind of goofy, a wannabe Zen master, but devastating in a close-combat fight.
Berushi Futaba
Complexity ★★☆☆☆. A heavy drinking Samurai, wandering as a ronin due to a past disgrace. Tough, broadly skilled, almost impossible to surprise, and deadly at melee and ranged.
Cho Arden
Complexity ★★★☆☆. A Korean transplant, trained as both musician and Demon Queller. Villages pay her to drive away supernatural threats, for which she uses brains and guile as often as weapons.
Yamadera Koichi
Complexity ★★★☆☆. A fresh-faced ninja (Martial Hero) in long-term cover as a guard from the capital. With his expensive arms and armor, he can sneak and snipe, able to disable a foe or kill them.
